Yes I play a lot of games. But I'm still working as a developer for other industries and typing these words in subway on a phone. And deep in my heart I yearn for the ideal job - a true game developer.
According the the demand pyramid, we have fundamental needs to live, social needs to gain self-recognition, and self-achievement needs to realize the meaning of life. And a game developer can balance through these all.
Firstly, it should earn enough money to cover everyday needs, and very likely to make the income grow faster than most jobs. This can be done. As one becomes more fluent in production and characterization, he will eventually create his masterpiece, thus making a lot of money enough to live a whole life.
Secondly, it should help in his way to communicate with the society. The game inspirations should source from life, whether to express his doubts in observation or to claim his pros and cons over self-other experiences, if those can be made into a game, then they should be somehow logical, and argue with logic is the best thing to do. Thereafter, people will experience the game and have their discussions, thus making the impact much wider.
Finally, it should help one with self-accomplishment. Having biological siblings is one thing, while having spiritual siblings is another. When one created a ever-lasting work, he will be more than happy to see it still exists even if he died. And humanity can be saved this way.
But most game developers now are still struggling their way to be such ideal. Some have some progress, some are willing but don't know how to start yet. I hope this community can be a camp for us developers to grow a better way of working, and save those homo ludens.
